Normally you spend money when you travel - but our volunteer Matthias Brennecke from Hamburg was different: he collected money on his 4th volunteer trip to Siret. Admittedly, Matthias traveled in an unusual way, he ran for “Mission Siret” on a donation marathon, on the route Chernivtsi - Siret. As a passionate endurance runner, Matthias actually prefers to run the half marathon distance, although he has also run the marathon three times. He has now combined the two for “Mission Siret”, running the 21 km practically as a “warm-up” at a running event in Kyiv last Sunday and completing the double distance four days later as an individual runner from Chernivtsi.

Unlike organized runs, Matthias could not count on any outside support along the way. He had to carry his own luggage in his backpack, refreshment stations were petrol stations and the usual high-calorie sports food was replaced by apple juice and muesli bars, among other things. However, none of this diminished the 31-year-old's enthusiasm.

Matthias had placed an appeal on a donation platform for his charity run. Initially, he hoped to raise a four-figure sum. But within a few hours, the sum had grown to around €3,000, and by the end, the account had just under €4,600. Matthias arrived in Siret on Thursday overjoyed, proud to have completed his 4th marathon and grateful for the “tailwind” of around 120 donors. Matthias donated the money collected to the Christmas parcel campaign.
